About Matthew

Quantum Physiques is the second company set up by owner, Matthew Powell. After successfully running PT4Life (a personal training partnership) for 7 years, Matthew left the UK in 2008 to take up a post in the prestigious, St Lucian health and wellbeing resort, The BodyHoliday (www.thebodyholiday.com), as their BodyAware Specialist. After 6 months of designing lifestyle, nutrition and exercise programmes for guests, Matthew was promoted to senior manager at the resort and put in charge of the Health and Wellbeing department as a whole.

After 18 months in the sunshine it was time to move on to challenges new and Matthew was honoured to be asked to head to Alberta, Canada, to work with the amazing and pioneering Quantum Speed team. Edmonton is a hotbed for (ice) hockey and produces many of the best players in the billion dollar NHL league. Quantum Speed’s record of successful draftees is second to none and the challenge of designing and delivering off-ice programmes to complement the on ice techniques and teachings of Olympic coach Steffany Hanlen was as rewarding a process as Matthew has enjoyed in 15 years of health and fitness training. Delivering seminars to the players on nutrition, psychology, and business as well as training the ice coaches in dry land specifics filled the rest of the summer whilst volunteering at the YMCA fitness Centre teaching packed out Indoor Cycle classes to their members and teen, summer programmes.

Matthew’s early career saw him graduate in Sport Studies & Coaching from The University of Birmingham in 1997 where he also coached the first unbeaten rugby team in King Edward VI School’s post war history leading to a county coaching and selector role. After returning from travelling, a year’s lecturing Sport Science in Neath & Port Talbot Tertiary College was soon followed by a Personal Training and Sport’s Therapy diploma, and PT4Life was set up.

From 2001 to 2008 Matthew personal trained out of 2 Cardiff gyms as well as running a corporate facility in the city centre and working weekends as the sport’s therapist for both Dinas Powys FC and Old Colstonians RFC. During this time further qualifications were gained in Kettle Bell training from Optimal Life Fitness, Indoor Cycling from Keiser and Box / Kickboxercise.

Matthew is now teaching (PTLLS) qualified and combines his personal training with exercise class tuition, Indoor cycling, fitness team teaching (core fitness, SAQ systems, circuit innovation and individual programme design), sports coaching (Dinas Powys Cricket Club) and health & nutrition consulting.
